I'm starting to feel as if this winter will never end! I miss the days where one
could spend hours outside under the warmth of the sun. One good thing comes
out of winter though: my documentary watching increases substantially. Lately, I've
been discovering the negative effects of fluoride in our drinking water (70% of
the US and 45% of Canada) and trying to figure out why Dave Chappelle would
give up the "American Dream" and escape to South Africa. Some riveting stuff!
Since I so desperately need some colour in my life I thought this dress was
the perfect pick-me-up. And while I love this dress, I got beef. Yes, major
beef. I recently received a gift card to Winners (TJ Maxx in the States). What
I find great about this store is that almost everything in there is sort of junk.
And what I mean about that is: other clothing stores that have overstock or items
that have been made incorrectly (wrong colour thread used, for example) instead
of throwing this stuff out they sell it to Winners. What a wonderful thing! Think
of all the stuff being saved from ending up in landfills! But then I found out this:
Winners doesn't bother to recycle anything. They throw all the cardboard boxes
their stuff comes in into the garbage compacter. Sigh. I'm pretty sure companies
get tax reductions for their environmentally friendly business practices, too....
Recycling is the easiest form of preventing garbage (besides reducing, hah)! So
I have never bought anything from Winners until this gift certificate, which
totally blows because that store has the most precious dresses for such
incredibly low prices. I had such a hard time narrowing my choices down
to three dresses, I wanted them all! Oh, well. I've got a moral compass
and it's not pointing me in the direction of Winners.

That's such a bummer that they don't recycle, I had no idea about that. I like how you've styled the high low dress for winter, as I usually only see high low stuff styled for spring and summer. Also like how you've belted your sweater. I've watched a few documentaries lately too. Guess it is a good time of year to do that haha.

ReplyDeleteAh no, it's such a bummer when places don't recycle. I am so thankful that our campus is really into recycling--we've got bins inside the buildings where classes are taught on nearly every floor, all around campus, and even in the dorms' individual rooms.

I have the same beef with make up companies that test on animals. I don't buy anything that isn't cruelty free. My only exception is make up that I get as gifts (my mom is an extreme coupon-er, so she gets a lot of drug store make up for free or next to free), because I don't want to waste it.

Erg, I hate it when stores do stuff like that. It's why I primarily buy vintage because I don't like to think about the bad stuff that goes on in big corporations. I do love this dress on you though! The colors are so nice for winter and the cardigan creates the perfect proportion. So pretty!
ReplyDeleteoh i loved hearing about the TJMaxx equivalent store, although i'm so pessimistic that it doesnt surprise me at all. and i love your commitment not to shop there, although of course a gift card. i recently bought two yoga mates from Ross (not sure if you have there, but same concept) but vouged a while back to not shop there for clothing & such since it's still fast fashion (and i've tried on some really weirdly hemmed things), and of course wished i could've got a more greener option for the yoga mats.

ReplyDeleteI never got into Dave Chappelle, but only because when he was popular I wasn't into comedy that much. But he's from my state & his city is the cutest place on Earth...so that makes me like him a lot more. They also had the best pizza I've ever had.
Well, ethics aside, I love this dress. I hate when I find out companies I would like to (or sometimes do like to) shop at practice/support things I'm against, but taking a stand is the best way to stimulate change - if they lose enough business, maybe something will change
